New Youth Program To Explore Local History of Black Excellence in Radio

info861217

ROCHESTER, NY -- RCTV was recently awarded a Historic Preservation Grant from the Rochester Area Community Foundation to support a new after-school program exploring the history and accomplishments of Rochester's first Black radio broadcasters through the medium of podcasting.

Youth interns will receive a stipend to produce a series of podcasts that tell the untold stories of people like Howard Coles and Alma Kelso, two of the first Black radio personalities in Rochester.

The program curriculum will combine archival research in the Rochester Museum and Science Center's Howard Coles Collection, as well as oral history interviews and mentorship with local media professionals.

RCTV is grateful to Rochester Area Community Foundation and the Rochester Museum and Science Center for their support of this project. We hope this will be the first of many such programs combining media production and local history.
